WorldWatch Week in Review: Final Update
December 12th, 2003 by Willy Smith in
I've only posted one article recently, about a FLOSS-friendly candidate present in the US presidential cycle. He's hoping that with FLOSS, it could get back to being an election.
WorldWatch is now a static site. I haven't been posting because I have been busy as the new editor of Linux Gazette. We have decided to divide any future content that would have been going into WorldWatch between Linux Gazette NewsBytes and a new site that will be up sometime later this month.
Now, in case you're wondering, I'm not doing this because WorldWatch was a boring job. Au contraire, it's been far more interesting than I ever could have imagined. “WorldWatch, a site focusing on how Linux and Open Source are effecting social, economic and political change throughout the world” was a passive mission, though. I think that after doing this for six months I have learned enough to take a more active role.
I will be moving as quickly as possible to somewhere in Europe, as I believe that will be one of the main centers for Linux and FLOSS development and activity during the next five to ten years. It also has become apparent that I cannot take on the new responsibilities I have been given without much faster and more reliable connectivity than is available anywhere I'd like to live here in Costa Rica.
I would like to thank all of you readers for participating in this experiment over the past six months. Please keep watching the site, as we will be updating it one more time with a link to the new site when ready to go. We hope that the combination of the new site, as well as the new format and content of Linux Gazette, will help you stay updated on current news and events. We want to encourage and enable you to participate in the world revolution known as Linux and FLOSS.

There aren't many numbers that put the US national debt to shame, but here's one: 1,100,000,000,000,000. What's that? That's how many floating-point operations per second the Roadrunner supercomputer at Las Alamos can perform. That's about 100 FLOPS per dollar of US debt (unfortunately, the debt is winning the second derivative race). Read the article about Roadrunner in this month's High Performance Computing issue of LJ.
Along with that, find out how to program the Cell processor and how to use CUDA with your NVIDIA GPU. Also in this issue: Mr HandS (aka Kyle Rankin) gives us a few tips on using Compiz, Chef Marcel shows you how to get blogging off your plate quicker, Mick Bauer talks about Samba security, Dan Sawyer interviews Cory Doctrow and Doc talks about how information technology can affect democracy and fix the national debt (just kidding about that last part). That and more for your reading pleasure in this month's Linux Journal.

Many thanks to Willy & company for the work done on WorldWatch.
I for one really appreciated an international perspective on
Open Source, and am sure that the lessons learned in the
WorldWatch experience will contribute to the continued
excellence of the Linxu Gazette.
